Emotional Wellness and AI Science, Engineering, Architecture, Development, and Leadership

by Mark D. Lerner, Ph.D.

Chairman, The National Center for Emotional Wellness

The rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our world. It's important to recognize that AI scientists, engineers, architects, developers, and leaders face tremendous pressure and demanding workloads, negatively affecting their well-being. Acknowledging the significance of this emotional aspect of working in AI, The National Center for Emotional Wellness (NCEW) has taken the initiative to address these challenges directly.

The demanding nature of AI places inordinate stress on professionals in this field. Long hours, tight deadlines, and the constant pressure to innovate and perform at peak levels contribute to emotional exhaustion and burnout (Koestner et al., 2020). AI personnel frequently work in isolated environments, sometimes at home, adding another layer of complexity and causing emotional distress that affects their personal and professional lives.

A unique stressor experienced by AI professionals is the need to stay updated with the latest technological advancements. As the field progresses rapidly, these individuals must continuously refine their knowledge base and skills to remain competitive (Heikkilä, 2022). This ongoing engagement leads to high-stress levels and burnout (Comer, 2023). By implementing an emotional wellness initiative, we can empower personnel in this evolving profession to cope more effectively (Mantello & Ho, 2023).

The National Center defines emotional wellness as an awareness, understanding, and acceptance of our feelings and the ability to navigate challenges and change. AI professionals must cultivate healthy, adaptive coping strategies, enhanced decision-making, and improved communication skills (Folkes et al., 2018). Neglecting emotional health can lead to a decrease in creativity, job satisfaction, and productivity.

As the premier organization dedicated to promoting emotional wellness across professions, including AI, the NCEW provides practical information and uniquely tailored presentations on emotional wellness. These resources empower AI scientists, engineers, architects, developers, and leaders to understand the impact of their emotions while utilizing their energy in goal-directed problem-solving ways.

By acknowledging the importance of emotional wellness within AI employment, the NCEW strives to support professionals in achieving optimal performance while maintaining their overall well-being.
