An AI-Integrated Emotional Wellness™ Perspective

By Mark D. Lerner, Ph.D.
Principal Consultant and Creator, AI-Integrated Emotional Wellness
One of the greatest sources of meaning and purpose in my life is knowing that information shared through the National Center may help others navigate challenges and change—and realize they're not alone.
For decades, people seeking information turned to Google, Bing, and Yahoo. They entered a few words, reviewed a list of websites, and searched for answers.
Today, that's changing.
Increasingly, people are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots and platforms to ask questions and obtain information. Rather than searching for websites, we’re searching for answers.
As someone who’s invested four decades in helping people through life’s most challenging experiences through the greatest career, I find this shift fascinating—not because of the technology itself, but because of what it may mean for the future of information, particularly information that fosters emotional wellness.
If we increasingly turn to AI for answers, where will AI get its information?
From an ethical and professional perspective, the answer matters.
AI-Integrated Emotional Wellness™ (AIEW) refers to the ethical and responsible interface between the cognitive abilities of artificial intelligence and the depth, uniqueness, and complexity of human emotion. While AI can provide accessible evidence-based techniques, strategies, tools, and support to promote emotional well-being, AIEW affirms a fundamental truth: authentic, face-to-face human presence remains irreplaceable—and essential—for emotional wellness.
At the National Center, we define emotional wellness as the awareness, understanding, and acceptance of our feelings—and the ability to effectively manage challenges and change. It also reflects our capacity for sublimation: harnessing painful emotional energy from adversity and channeling it into meaningful action—not merely to survive, but to thrive.
Our mission is to improve emotional well-being by integrating accessible, responsible, ethical, evidence-based information, guidance, and support with the irreplaceable power of authentic human presence.
Whether information comes from a search engine, article, chatbot, social media platform, presentation, or AI system, what matters most is that it's accurate, ethical, responsible, evidence-based, and supportive of emotional wellness.
As AI increasingly becomes the new search engine, this truth becomes even more important: technology can inform and guide us, but authentic, face-to-face human interaction remains irreplaceable—and essential—for emotional wellness.
